One of the bands playing at this year’s Blast Beats & Brews (BB & B) is the loud, raw, and all-over-the-place metal group Subdivisions. Blending hardcore, punk rock, black metal, thrash, and melodic deathcore, as Will Herald describes, “gritty.” Based right here in Atlanta, Subdivisions have been around since 2009. Despite minor changes to the lineup over the years, the core of the band (Joe Przyworski - vocals, Will Herald - drums, & Brian Nichols - guitar) has remained the same. Moreover, the current lineup which include James Ashworth - bass and Lee Christenson – guitars, has stood strong for the last seven years, respectively. I caught up with Will and Joe to get to learn more about the band before BB & B fest.

he band has quite a long history. “The core of the band, Joe, myself, and then our guitar player, Brian, have been friends for over 20 years, and we played in different music projects together growing up. And then about, let's say, about 15 years ago, in 2009, we kind of started. That's when Joe joined the band on vocals, and we kind of started, like pretty much the early stages.”
When listing off their influences the list runs the gamut and crosses the bridge between punk and metal. “Descendants are one of my favorite bands. Their drummer, Bill Stevenson, he kind of helped pave the way as far as, what I like to play.” Will Explains. “Poison the Well, Misery Signals, Converge.” Will continues. They go on listing Iron Maiden, Metallica, Rush, and Slayer as just some of their influences.
When asked what has kept them so together so long, “this lineup is the most solid lineup we've ever had. And our ability to just be able to, to write songs with this core group of guys, it's kind of come the most naturally. it's just been, a work in progress and a learning progress of how to, you know, communicate with each other musically... [and] ...on an interpersonal level.” Says Will.
Along with playing the BB & B fest and other shows Subdivisions is well underway recording a new EP under the label they just signed with Dark Sails Entertainment. The EP, titled Habitual is slated to drop in May or June, and expect to hear some of those new tracks at the BB & B fest on Saturday, April 26th. Tickets are on sale now.
