ONE BREATH AT A TIME
MY ROLE
I served as Writer, Director, and Producer on the project. I oversaw the entire production process — from story conception and casting to production and post. I worked closely with our editor to shape the final cut, providing direction and creative feedback throughout the post-production process.
THE CHALLENGE
The project had to be completed — from idea to final export — in under 48 hours. Beyond the intense time constraint, we faced several unique challenges:

Working with a lead actor on the autism spectrum for the first time, which required thoughtful communication and a sensitive approach to directing

A cast with limited to no on-camera experience, which made performance coaching essential

No time for traditional pre-production; almost all creative decisions had to be made on the fly — from blocking to tone to shot selection
THE PROCESS
With no time for standard pre-production, we made creative and logistical decisions in real-time. I kept the narrative focused and intimate to allow space for natural performances and emotional truth. On set, I prioritized comfort and trust — especially for the lead — creating an environment that supported vulnerability and improvisation where needed.
In post, I collaborated closely with our editor to shape tone, performance, and visual rhythm. I provided narrative guidance, pacing direction, and scene-level feedback to help tighten emotional beats and preserve clarity throughout the film’s tonal shifts.
THE OUTCOME
Despite the compressed timeline and nontraditional cast, One Breath at a Time emerged as a grounded and emotionally resonant short. I’m particularly proud of how we maintained tone and performance continuity while adapting moment-to-moment. The film is a testament to what a focused team with clear intention can accomplish under pressure.
REFLECTIONS
This project deepened my experience as a director and creative lead. How to trust collaborators, respond to what’s in front of me, and still deliver something with heart and structure. It also deepened my understanding of working with neurodivergent performers, which I consider a critical skill as a director and team leader.
